Red or White…which do you prefer??

Red or White??

I’m a total red wino all the way! Give me a glass of Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon and I’m in my happy place.  But when it comes to sangria I could go either way!  When I make red sangria I don’t make it as dry as I go for my in my glass of wine.  And white sangria can have such a crisp refreshing taste!  I have made both for parties or camping and is always a hit!  During our COVID shutdown I made white sangria just because I wanted to and needed something to do lol

The best part with making sangria is you can throw in that bottle you received as a gift that you really didn’t care much for.  I personally buy cheap bottles of wine….I’m not much of a boxed wine drinker and with the bottles you can toss in a variety of flavors!  I always think “who am I serving this to?” If it’s for a party I try to lean a little more towards a sweeter taste than a dry taste.  Even if the wine you have tends to be on the dryer side you can sweeten up the sangria with a little more juice or some Simple Syrup.  Simple Syrup is really just sugar and water so you could always make this at home instead of buying it.

One of my favorite things with White Sangria is the fruit you put in it changes the flavor completely!  I personally put the fruit on the side and let each guest put their own choice of fruit into the sangria.  Some of my favorite fruit options are: oranges, lemons, lime, pears, and grapes.  I’m not a fan of strawberries because the seeds tend to fall off and I have a glass full of strawberry seeds.  Another options with White Sangria is to put either a white soda or champagne in it!  This adds a little extra fun 😊

With either Red or White Sangria I like to get a couple different bottles of wine.

For Red I will mix it up with Cabernets, Merlots, Pinot Noir.  I also like to throw in some of the sweet reds.  I really don’t do much measuring…I am more of a dump, taste, add this or that, taste until it is just to my liking.  I also like to put some brandy, triple sec and cranberry or pomegranate juice.  I’ll use some simple syrup to sweeten if needed.  With Red Sangria you can also get away with dumping some of those whites or blush wines into it as well!

Here is a simple red recipe:

  • 1 Bottle red wine
  • 2 ounces Triple Sec
  • 2 ounces Brandy
  • Simple Syrup as needed
  • 1 Cup Juice (Cranberry or Pomegranate)

For White I will grab some Chardonnay and Moscato.  I like to use White Grape juice and Vodka…I have tossed in some Grapefruit vodka but not too much as this can get to be a little over powering. Again using the simple syrup to sweet it up as needed or just more Moscato!

Here is a simple white recipe:

  • 1 Bottle white wine
  • 2 ounces vodka
  • 2 ounces Triple Sec
  • Simple Syrup as needed
  • 1 Cup White Grape Juice

Either sangria can be a great drink at your party or just because “I feel like it” at home!

  1. Red all the way! Occasionally if I need white to cook with I use a sauvignon blanc and I will finish drinking the bottle. I prefer a very dry red wine. Thanks for the sangria recipes! Good to have for summertime parties!
